Crystal butterfly hair pin

This is my memorial piece for my crystal butterfly. I've been working on this idea for a long time, and it will be a part of my regalia when powwows start up again.

As many of you know, I have a slew of physical and mental disabilities. One of the physical ones is PCOS. This contributes to many imbalances in the body, and also affects fertility. In my case, it means that I am unable to carry a child to term. I also only figured this out after a late term miscarriage. My former partner and I had named her as well, which makes it hurt even more. Erica Jamie Elizabeth, won't bother mentioning the last name as the partner was not involved. Or just Eri, for short. After I lost her, saying her name was too difficult for a long time, so i called her my crystal butterfly. I have a matching tattoo as well.

My struggle with the fertility issues has been extremely difficult for me. I found out at 18 that I would most likely never be able to have another child, and losing Eri means that I will never be a biological mother. I do not believe that you need to have a uterus to be a female, nor do you need to physically have a child to be a mother, but the patriarchal values that have been ingrained in me through my whole life.
Its been extremely difficult to come to terms with, and making pieces like this has helped me a lot. It's given me something that I can hold onto.

This piece is made with cabachons, a single bugle bead, colourlined czech 11/0's, sterling silver miyuki 11/0's, and silver plated banding, on commercial hide. The clip it is on is the pinch-style version.
